What is the Halbach array?

The Halbach Array is a magnetic array that produces a high magnetic field utilizing permanent magnets, arranged with a spatially rotating magnetic field vector which has the effect of focusing and augmenting the magnetic field on one side, while cancelling it out on the other.

Halbach Array is able to achieve very high and uniform flux densities without necessitating any power input or cooling, which an electromagnet would require.

The form and application of Halbach array

1, Linear (Planar) Halbach Array

Linear Halbach arrays consist of discrete, rectangular permanent magnets mounted on a ferromagnetic backplate with varying magnetic orientations that serve to focus the field on one side of the array, producing a uniform and powerful semi-sinusoidal magnetic field. Linear (planar) arrays can also be used in a yoke configuration to produce a very powerful sinusoidal field in the gap.

2，Halbach Cylinder - Circular Halbach Arrays

A Halbach cylinder is a circular Halbach array consisting of several trapezoidal or arc-shaped magnet segments with magnetic orientation vectors that rotate in order to focus the field. They are routinely built in quadrupole, hexapole, sextupole, octupole and other magnet configurations. Generally, the larger the number of discrete magnets with a corresponding number of magnetic

vector angles, the more uniform the field across the inside diameter of the Halbach assembly.

Magnetic Coupling Parts

Halbach cylinders are used in NMR devices, sophisticated high-torque motors, beam focusing, research and magnetic particle separation equipment for industrial, life science, R & D and medical applications.

How do we assemble the Halbach array?

Method 1: According to the topology of the array, use magnet glue to bond the magnetized magnet segments together. Because the mutual repulsion between the magnet segments is very strong, the mold should be used for clamping during adhesion. This method has low manufacturing efficiency, but is easier to implement, and is more suitable for laboratory research.

Method 2: First use the method of filling or pressing to make a complete magnet, and then magnetize in a special fixture. The array structure processed by this method is similar to the figure below. This method has high processing efficiency and comparison. It is easy to realize mass production. However, it is necessary to specially design magnetizing fixture and formulate magnetizing process.

Method 3: Use a special-shaped winding array to realize the Halbach-type magnetic field distribution.

Halbach linear array:

It combines the radial and parallel arrangement of magnets to form a one-sided magnetic field (one-sided field), which is a significant feature of Halbach. This characteristic indicates that Halbach magnets have very good application value in linear motors (linear motors).
