The high antibacterial activity of pionin was first reported in 1951. The structure of pionin is very similar to that of cyan dye. The structure contains a thiazide ring, which is bound to the N-site of the heptyl group as a nitrogenous heterocyclic ring. According to the report, the antimicrobial activity of pironin is mainly related to the length of N-acetyl group.
