Radix Codonopsis is mainly produced in such places as Dingxi, Tianshui, Pingliang, Qingyang, Longnan, Gannan, Linxia and Lanzhou of Gansu Province. Weiyuan County is the "hometown of Radix Codonopsis in China". It is sweet and mild; it passes through spleen and lung. Its functions include strengthening spleen and tonifying lung, nourishing blood and promoting the secretion of body fluid. It is mainly used for such symptoms as spleen-lung qi deficiency, reduced appetite, tiredness, cough, dyspnea of deficiency type, deficiency of qi and blood, sallow complexion, palpitation, short of breath, body fluid impairment, thirst and internal heat dispersion-thirst. Modern studies find that is has such effects as enhancing immunity, expanding blood vessel, reducing pressure, improving microcirculation and enhancing hematopoietic function. It is a common traditional tonic.
